Douglas DC-3 / Dakota je dvoumotorový vrtulový dopravní letoun, dolnoplošník celokovové konstrukce, jehož výkony způsobily ve 30. a 40. letech 20. století revoluci v letecké dopravě.

The Douglas DC-3 is a propeller-driven airliner which had a lasting effect on the airline industry in the 1930s/1940s and World War II. It was developed as a larger, improved 14-bed sleeper version of the Douglas DC-2. It is a low-wing metal monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear, powered by two 1,200 hp (890 kW) Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial piston engines. It has a cruise speed of 207 mph (333 km/h), capacity of 21 to 32 passengers or 6,000 lbs (2,700 kg) of cargo, a range of 1,500 mi (2,400 km), and could operate from short runways.

Douglas C-47A/B Skytrain byl americký dvoumotorový transportní letoun, který byl vojenskou verzí dopravního letounu Douglas DC-3, jenž je znám pod označením RAF Douglas C.Mk.I až IV Dakota. Letoun sloužil nejen jako nákladní, ale i jako výsadkový pod názvem Douglas C-53 Skytrooper, vlečný pro kluzáky, průzkumný, záchranný a cvičný TC-47B. Základní označení amerického námořnictva bylo pro tyto letouny R4D s přidaným číslem podle verzí. Účastnil se 2. světové války (operace Market Garden, Overlord, Husky, Varsity a Avalanche), války v Koreji i ve Vietnamu. V USA bylo vyrobeno 10 654 kusů, přes 2 000 jich bylo vyrobeno licenčně v SSSR jako Lisunov Li-2, dalších 485 bylo vyrobeno v Japonsku u firem Nakajima a Showa. Do poválečného Československého vojenského letectva byl typ zařazen pod označením D 47, čtyřicet ze 72 zakoupených C-47 létalo u ČSA.

Douglas Aircraft (oficiální název The Douglas Aircraft Company) byla americká letecká firma založená v červenci 1921 Donaldem Willsem Douglasem, Sr. (6. dubna 1892-1. února 1981) ve městě Santa Monicav Kalifornii.

The Douglas Aircraft Company was an American aerospace manufacturer based in Southern California. It was founded in 1921 by Donald Wills Douglas Sr. and later merged with McDonnell Aircraft in 1967 to form McDonnell Douglas, when it then operated as a division of McDonnell Douglas. McDonnell Douglas later merged with Boeing in 1997.

The relationship between this DC3, affectionately known as “Betsy” and Cathay Pacific Airways started as early as 1945. Originally planned as a civil DC3/360, the aircraft was taken over by the military before construction was completed and designated a C47. It was delivered to the United States Army Air Corps on June 4 1942 and in August 1943 was deployed overseas with the U.S. military but so far no details are known as to which theatre of war it served. In the latter half of 1945, when it was returned to the USA for disposal, the aircraft was purchased by a demobilised WWII pilot Roy Farrell who wanted to return to the Orient he had grown fond of during the war.
